So for my future niece or nephew, I’ve been making blocks. Mary got me started with the idea. She grew up with a set of plastic canvas alphabet blocks that her mother made. So I started thinking that making blocks symbolic of the states that future niece/nephew’s family lives in would be pretty cool. I completed my first block yesterday which as you can probably tell is for Texas. It would be awesome to eventually make all 50 states. But that’s a long term goal.

I’m looking for ideas for the states of Oregon and Wisconsin.

For Oregon, I’m going to attempt the beaver side of the flag, mount hood, and a University of Oregon side. Still coming up with other ideas. I also plan on doing the state shape with a star on approximately where the state capital is located.

For Wisconsin, I’m going to do a side with the state shape, and then cheese, and probably something about the great lakes. I could use some other ideas.

Last night Erin and I went over to Mary’s to make jewelry and have a craft night together. It was a great break from the usual routines. Erin was making earrings for possible christmas gifts. I was putting together earrings from skull beads Mary had bought a year ago from a awesome bead shop in Houston.

1st pair of skull earrings.

After our enjoyable crafting evening, I think we all agreed will have to get together to do it again.

Winter Garden Stretch of West Orange Trail

Friday I rode 40 miles for the first time in my cycling. I went out to Orlando to check out a bike shop for a new seat and figured I’d take my bike along and ride the West Orange Trail again.

I first rode the trail last spring, just after buying my road bike. I attended a conference at Disney and was looking for somewhere to ride. (As much as I love Disney, they are not bike friendly on their main property.) I found information about the West Orange Trail and decided to head out there and take a ride around.

This trip I knew better what to expect along the trail, but still discovered an interesting section I hadn’t ridden on before. I passed the Kilarney Station and kept going because the paved portion of trail continued. Next thing I knew I was on another trail. I think it was the Lake Minneola Scenic Trail, but I’m not positive as I didn’t stop to read the tiny trail markers. Anyway, turns out this section of trail has the highest hills of any of the converted railways trail system. I’ve decided to make the trip out to the West Orange Trail and Lake Minneola Scenic Trail? more frequently as I train for the MS 150 since this is as good as it gets in Florida for hills, which I’m mildly terrified of facing on the BP150.

My bicycle

Today I signed up for the BP MS 150 from Houston to Austin. I’ll be riding with my dad and brother-in-law as well as a couple of my dad’s friends. Needless to say I’m nervous about the event. Apparently 13000 people ride in the BP MS 150, that’s more bikes on the road then I’ve seen since I started road riding. Not mention I’m nervous about the hills. I plan on trying to document my training for the event more, and I’ll be doing some of that documenting here on the blog. Stay tuned and if you can help and donate to the cause please do.

Well, it was bound to happen eventually. Last week I turned 30. I had an enjoyable celebration to welcome the start of my 3rd decade. My sister flew into town to help celebrate. A group of friends and I went to a murder/mystery dining experience in Orlando. The actors were good and the show was pretty funny.

I threw a small baby shower for my sister. We decorated bad ass onesies for the future kiddo, made noah’s ark cupcakes, and had a lazy saturday together. Mary bought awesome tickets for an excellent production of Kiss Me Kate at the Shakespeare Theater in Orlando.

All and all a completely legen (wait for it) dary weekend.

I know this post is pretty late, but Dragon*Con was pretty awesome this year. It was nice going with my brother and friends. I think my favorite moments were (in no particular order):

  • Marching with the 76th,
  • Making costumes for Mary and Nathan,
  • Having Edward James Olmos lead the BSG fans, in cheers of “So Say We All,”
  • The Firefly Panel, particularly the lessons in Soap Opera Acting and Tile,
  • Learning about sketching live models,
  • Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog and Buffy Sing-along,
  • looking at all the costumes on everyone else,
  • Adam West,
  • also, Dragon Sex Panel.
