This weekend I participated in my second MS150 event and my first MS150 event in Florida. This time I attempted to start my own team at USF and ride the ride. I can say that my attempt to start a team was only slightly successful. We did have the required number of members, etc, but just not that many people. I met a professor here at USF, who rode with us and seems committed to the idea of trying to get the team to take off a little more for next year. Fingers crossed, USF will be a bigger presence at next year’s ride.

Early morning on Day 1

The ride itself went great. Sabrina and I both finished without too much struggle. The route is pretty nice, although some of the roads could stand to be repaved. Bok Tower is actually the highest natural point in Florida so on Day you get to start the day with a long downhill, a section of flats through the country, and then some more hills. On the after lunch stage of the ride we hit even more hills, but the best thing about hills are the downhills. On a couple of them, I made 25 mph sans pedaling. I wound up riding mostly with Stefan on Day 1. We lost Sabrina on one of the uphills. We arrived at the Caribe Royale at about 11:30 AM. Sabrina arrived about 30 minutes later. Unfortunately, they didn’t really have a lunch spread at the end, just some snackage. But they did have a massage tent and Sabrina and I each got a 15 minute massage. I think it helped with recovery for day 2.

We went to the dinner provided that night. Maureen Manley, a former bicycling race champion until she was diagnosed with MS, was the keynote speaker. I was pretty moved by the dinner. Even though I don’t have anyone I’m particularly close to that has MS, the weirdness of the disease and the fact that I still feel pretty helpless in understanding what caused Mom’s death, means that MS seems like as good a disease as any to support.

Sabrina at start of Day 2.

Day 2 started early, but the nice thing was we got to sleep in till about 5AM. The beds at the Caribe Royale were really comfortable,  and I slept fantastically. The next day was a bit of a rough start. But I found myself latching onto other folks’ wheels and then passing them later. Sabrina found a group of teachers at the lunch stop that were just at her pace, so I got ahead of her again. I averaged about 14.1 mph on Day 2 and felt really good. At the end I definitely had some struggling getting back up a few of the hills and those last 15 miles were hard, but I finished strong. On the last 2 miles I figured I should just dig deep and pedal fast. It may be Tuesday, but I’m still riding my weekend high.

Thanks to everyone who donated to this event and thanks especially to Mary’s grandparents, Marilyn and Ed for letting Sabrina and I stay at their house on Friday night and use it as a post-ride rest stop on Sunday. I’ll be riding this event again next year and would love to have more people to ride with :)

Continuing to work on strategies for building up my USF Health MS 150 team. I emailed the head of public relations on Friday, he forwarded my email to someone in Health that might be interested. I also got my first phone call from someone who might be interested in joining the team or helping out. I’m excited. I hope this goes well. I also signed up to help organize things for the ride. I hope I get to participate more fully in this ride and in the MS 150 cause. Please if anyone has any thoughts about how to get more riders, etc, let me know.

I’ve decided to participate in a MS 150 again this year. This year I plan to ride in the Citrus Tour, a MS 150 ride in central Florida. I found it a good way to have a goal and get myself motivated to ride. I’ve also decided to participate more fully, so I’m attempting to put together a team from work (also including non-work people as well).

Working in health (IT sure, but still a part of the health care community) I feel it’s important for us to participate in charitable work that help others with health issues. This is also good marketing for the USF Health brand. Now I’ve just got to figure out who to talk to and how to go about getting riders and support from USF Health. I don’t think I ever thought that organizing a cycling/charitable team would be something I was interested in, and yet here I am attempting to do this. Anyone with any experience trying to get company support for this kind of event please help me out with some ideas to get people involved.

I’m trying to reflect on the experience that was the BP MS150. MS charity rides happen all over the place, but it was a privilege to take part in the largest ride in the country. It was an even greater privilege though to get to turn this event into a family affair. Riding with my brother-in-law, Matt, Dad, and David Bernsen (who was one of my girl scout troop leaders from when I was a brownie) was awesome. I jokingly told Kim that it felt like I was in an episode of My Two Dads, since David is also a very fatherly figure. Kim laughed and said, “yeah it feels like a weekend with your two dads.” Also great was getting to be in same town for Kim’s 29th birthday. I was glad to get to see Kim and Orson (who just keeps growing.)

This video is of the weather when we left. It was easy to see why Day 1 was canceled. Apparently, there were tornado warnings along the route and flooding in the big field where some people camp at the halfway point. That didn’t mean people didn’t still ride some or all of Day 1. Which is why when we reached Fayetteville, TX (one of the stops along the route), it was incredibly touching that people were out to cheer.

People cheering for cyclist entering Fayetteville.

People cheering for cyclist entering Fayetteville.

Irene, Dick, and I entered one antique store opened in the town square and the lady working the counter said she got up that morning and it was dark and storming, but she saw some riders cycle by and she knew she had to come into town and open up the store. The people in the picture had music going and cow bells to ring every time a rider came by. I got on and rode my bike in Fayetteville. Just around the corner someone had baked cookies and had drinks and water out to help support the riders. They knew that the normal support stops weren’t going to be there for the cyclists on Saturday. It was a moving experience, and Fayetteville definitely earned their claim as the bike friendliest town in Texas.

Dad, Matt, David & I rode into La Grange, TX which was the Day 1 endpoint for the MS150.  Lots of folks were on bikes, either riding into town or just getting some riding in before the next days start. We stayed at a nice little B&B out of town that evening. David and I rode from there to get onto the MS150 trail and that’s how the second started for me. Dad & Matt had decided to ride the state park ride (which has more hills, so they actually had Dick drive them into town to start at the start in La Grange). Most of Sunday I rode with David. He was very kind and let me keep up, which was helpful. I found that I definitely need to do more riding.

Because the 150′s a charity ride there is a lot of supporters out to cheer people on. I don’t think I’ve ever done anything that involved that many volunteers, police, etc. It was moving to see so many people involved in a charitable event and making sure that it went smoothly for everyone involved. Right before we made it to Bastrop for lunch, there was a large group of supporters out cheering, ringing cowbells, and one guy riding his stationary bike along with us. In Bastrop we got back together with Dad and Matt. Kim, Orson, Irene & Dick were able to meet us there as well, which was great.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many bicyclists on the road in my life, nor so many flat tires, nor so many people cheering and supporting each of us as we rode along. It is one event I want to do again, because I know I can ride it better, but also because it felt incredibly meaningful. And getting to ride through the finish with my dad was priceless.

  • 11000 people showed up and rode in the BPMS150. That’s 85% despite 1st day cancel. I’m home now, but it was great trip. #
  • Gosh, bike chain is filthy. Need to clean it tonight and get it ready for riding again. Got to get ready for that triathlon leg. #

  • I need to drop my bike off at the bike shop today. Time for it’s annual maintenance. Plus, I want it tip-top for MS 150 next weekend. #
  • Crap. So apparently the internal mechanism of my left shifter is busted. Still under warranty, good news. Bad news 5-7 days. #

I’ve met and exceeding my fundraising goal for the MS 150. Thank you everyone who contributed. With your help I raised $445 dollars for the National MS Society.

It’s hard to believe but the weekend after Easter I’ll be heading to Houston in order to actually ride in this thing. I’m looking forward to it. Although, I must admit I’m also a bit daunted.

Thanks again everybody.

Good weekend for riding, I went out on Friday and Saturday to Winter Garden to ride the West Orange Trail. Friday, I went out from Winter Garden to Clermont, FL and saw a few of the historic downtowns of these little towns. I also tried the little French place in Winter Garden afterwards. Excellent croissants and eclairs.

On Saturday’s ride I started from Winter Garden and rode out to Apoka. I finally found where downtown Apopka was on the trail. Unfortunately, it’s not quite as scenic as the other direction. Part of the trail was near the sewage center. I’ve ridden this trail a few times and had always gone straight missing the turn for Apopka, which makes a difference in the length. Instead I always wound up at the horse center, which i did on Saturday as well. I took a break there to watch some show jumping that was going on at that time. When I got back to Winter Garden I rode through the downtown. The main road through town had been blocked off, and I wanted to see what was going on. There was this neat car show. All these old vehicles parked up and down the street. There was a model-t and the Hudson Hornet (like from Cars).
