I watched the series finale of Lost about a week ago. Let me just say the finale has sort of preyed on my mind. A lot of folks seems to be upset at the lack of answered questions or disappointed at the oddity of what the show turned out to be. After thinking about it for awhile, it suddenly hit me that this show is something of a meditation on life and death and after life. I’ve decided to go back to rewatch the show from Season 1. I’ve just finished watching Season 1. I was surprised how the themes of letting go and the strength of connections between people are there from the start. To me the finale suggests that there are lot of things in life we place tremendous importance on (pushing buttons, etc) yet these things aren’t really that important when compared to creating connections and relationships with our fellow humans. And that is what I feel like the sideways universe highlights.

Season 1 begins as a way to show the forging of the connections between all these characters. But also I think the series finale firmly establishes that in many ways Lost is Jack’s story. So going back and rewatching the season from that perspective, I think begins to change the way I see the show. I also think watching the show again from that first season and seeing how cliffhanger episodes lead into the next episode aren’t nearly as frustrating as I remember when it took a week or more between episodes. I’ve been kind of surprised at how quickly things move when episodes are watched back to back.

I’ll revisit this again after rewatching Season 2.

I realize that the title of this post looks like some crazy government acronym or CIO inspired acronym for one of our IS apps or perhaps just some made up word. It’s not exactly the third, but it is a made-up acronym for a very real issue. That’s right a real issue known simply as the “Boy I’m seeing who offers potential commitment or not” or BISWOPCON, or if it were a girl than a GISWOPCON.

Sometimes while dating you may meet that person that you don’t want to refer to as a boyfriend/girlfriend, since that suggests a permanence and commitment you’re just not ready to admit to, but then again this person you met could well become that committed relationship of a boyfriend/girlfriend. This is when to use the acronym BISWOPCON. Say it once and suddenly all your inquisitive friends will know exactly what stage of the relationship you’re in your strategic dating.

Caveat: if you use this descriptor for too long your friends and your BISWOPCON will begin suspect you’re a committment-phone. They’re probably right.

miniTrain

Miniaturizing a train

I learned how to do a new effect with my photos in Photoshop today. Actually, the bass player from Death Cab for Cutie gave a little video tutorial in this blog post at current.com. I don’t own a tilt-shift lens, but I dug throw some of my photos and thought this one might work ok. To some extent the train already looked like a miniature, but I plan to experiment further with this effect and see what else I can make small.

Every time I watch this video, my happiness levels go way up. Bad day, I just watch this. I’m sure eventually I’ll get sick of it, but the obvious joy in the dance of the wedding party, just makes my day. It’s amazing how well this video has done, but I think most people who click on it are responding to the infectious joy.
