I watched the series finale of Lost about a week ago. Let me just say the finale has sort of preyed on my mind. A lot of folks seems to be upset at the lack of answered questions or disappointed at the oddity of what the show turned out to be. After thinking about it for awhile, it suddenly hit me that this show is something of a meditation on life and death and after life. I’ve decided to go back to rewatch the show from Season 1. I’ve just finished watching Season 1. I was surprised how the themes of letting go and the strength of connections between people are there from the start. To me the finale suggests that there are lot of things in life we place tremendous importance on (pushing buttons, etc) yet these things aren’t really that important when compared to creating connections and relationships with our fellow humans. And that is what I feel like the sideways universe highlights.

Season 1 begins as a way to show the forging of the connections between all these characters. But also I think the series finale firmly establishes that in many ways Lost is Jack’s story. So going back and rewatching the season from that perspective, I think begins to change the way I see the show. I also think watching the show again from that first season and seeing how cliffhanger episodes lead into the next episode aren’t nearly as frustrating as I remember when it took a week or more between episodes. I’ve been kind of surprised at how quickly things move when episodes are watched back to back.

I’ll revisit this again after rewatching Season 2.

There’s an ad on TV that goes through all the ways humanity is technologically connected. It goes through statistics within so many minutes on how many people are using GPS directions, texting, finding a restaurant to eat at online, and twittering. I love technology, gadgets, etc. I twitter, blog (obviously), and text. I’ve started to use Blip.fm, which actually I figure will be a later post. I’m fascinated by the stories of news events broken first online by regular, non-journalist, types.

But this ad on TV points to another aspect of these social media. It feels a bit like bragging. A look at us we’re so connected to the world. Sometimes I wonder how connected we really are. It seems that we have all these various ways to connect, yet so much of these connections are superficial. I don’t even mean the superficiality of being online acquaintances via facebook, etc. I guess what I find occasionally disconcerting is that friends I’m close with can’t put their phone down while hanging out and quit texting. Facebook’s statuses stand in for actual connections. Tweets make you feel close to people you don’t actually know. I think perhaps many people who love their technology, gadgets, and gizmos (I count myself there), can’t help but wonder about the golden-tinged past. Nostalgia, though, is a false past. Basically, I think more than anything I’m a little sick of the whoa look at the world and all the technology and how fast it moves news articles and their ilk. We live in the world we live in, but please don’t text during the non-virtual moments of life.
